8th Grade Parent Information Night

John Durkee, Marcellus Senior High School Principal, welcomed families to the Marcellus Senior High School 8th Grade Parent Information Night on January 7, 2010 by citing three essential words from the District’s mission statement, “responsibility, confidence, and knowledge.” Durkee also told the attentive audience that this was the start of a partnership to prepare students to be successful for life after high school. Approximately one hour later, Michael Dardaris, Driver Middle School Principal, brought the evening to a close as he urged parents and students alike “to get involved” at the high school. Dardaris also spoke to the “well rounded high school program” and the environment of “advocating for students” that defines the Marcellus Central School District. In between Durkee and Dardaris, district administrators and department leaders shared information on high school instructional programs. Dr. Craig Tice, Superintendent of Schools, reflected on the potential impact state budget cuts may have on District programs and offerings. Alan Wing, guidance department leader, outlined the transition process to the high school while Kristin Schoeneck, high school guidance counselor, reviewed graduation requirements. Department leaders then presented an overview of course offerings and individual subject area requirements. Among the department leaders introduced by Assistant Principal Deborah Glisson to present at the 8th grade orientation were Cathy Arvantides/Career and Technology Education; Vicki Williams/Science; Jeanne Overend/Mathematics; Shelly Marsh/World Languages; Carmen Costa, Jr./Fine Arts; Laurie Updike/Physical Education; Joanne Lewandowski/Exceptional Education; Ryann Riefler/English; and Jessica Docteur/Grade 7-12 Curriculum Coordinator, who presented on Social Studies. The theme for the informational evening was one of involvement with the spotlight being clearly focused on the opportunities available for each and every student. From course offerings, to extra-curricular activities, to academic support, to the more than a dozen courses offered for college/AP credit, 8th grade parents and students were introduced to an exciting high school partnership of learning.
