KCH unfurls Old Glory for Flag Day

KCH Elementary third-graders (from left) Bronte S., Hannah D. and
Kendra C. offer a patriotic Flag Day greeting to their classmates.

Students at K.C. Heffernan Elementary passed beneath a gauntlet of red, white and blue, as a trio of third-graders greeted classmates with crossed American flags at the school's entrance for Flag Day

The students, dubbed grade "leaders" by Principal Gary Bissaillon, also researched the 63-year-old holiday and shared the fruits of their fact-finding with the school, during morning announcements.

Kendra Connor described the significance of 50 stars and 13 stripes (the number of states and original colonies, respectively). She also explained the meaning behind the flag's three colors: "Red is heartiness and valor," Kendra said. "White represents purity and innocence. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice."

Hannah Durand let everyone know U.S. President Harry S. Truman declared Flag Day a national holiday in 1949.
