A Student Learning Objective (SLO) in geometry created by Marcellus High School math teacher Craig Chamberlain has been selected by the New York State Education Department to be posted on the EngageNY.org website.
An SLO is used to prepare students for future
growth and development, as well as for college studies and careers.
Mr. Chamberlain was one of approximately 85 teachers asked to participate in the process of writing SLOs for one course section. According to the EngageNY site, the teachers “examined baseline and historical data, considered the learning content of their course, and developed ambitious and rigorous targets.”
In a July 9 letter to Marcellus Superintendent of Schools Dr. Craig J. Tice, Regents Research Fund Fellow Dr. Julia Rafal and NYSED Associate for Curriculum, Instruction and Field Services Vicki Jones commended Mr. Chamberlain’s SLO for its “rigor and clear alignment of learning content, target and evidence.”
The state education department created EngageNY as an evolving, collaborative platform for educators to access and share resources.
