The award, which includes a $2,000 prize for Cuello and $1,000 for the high school, honors educators who “have devoted their lives to preparing students to achieve and excel in a higher education setting,” according to a letter from Nancy O. Gray, president of Hollins University, located in Roanoke, Va.
Marcellus High School 2011 graduate Megan Grosholz, who is now a senior at Hollins, nominated Ms. Cuello.
“The evidence of your extraordinary teaching skills and your worthiness of this award lives in (Megan) and, I am sure, all the fortunate students whose lives you have touched,” Gray writes.
The award is made possible by The Decker Endowment, which was established in 2007 by Hollins alumna Mary Bernhardt Wolfe Decker, who believes high school teachers do not get the recognition they deserve.
Ms. Cuello, who teaches English and French at Marcellus, also was honored earlier this year with an award for her poetry. The 2013 New Letters Poetry Prize included a $1,500 cash prize and publication in the annual awards issue.
