District seeks community support for new softball field

The Marcellus Central School District is hoping to drum up some “grassroots” support for the construction of an on-campus softball field – pun intended.

Plans for a new field, to be located near the baseball field behind the high school on Mile High Drive, already have been drafted by the school district’s architect and approved by the New York state Education Department.

But the estimated price tag runs anywhere from $350,000 to $400,000. So Board of Education President Ryan Riefler and members of the district facilities committee are asking for the community’s help. They’ve scheduled a public meeting about the project at 7 p.m. April 3 in the high school learning commons.

“In an effort to keep costs down, the school district is seeking donations of time, talent, materials and money,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Craig J. Tice said. “We encourage Marcellians with an interest in rolling up their sleeves and lending a hand to attend the meeting.”

Some organizations, including the Marcellus Sports Boosters Club and the Marcellus Optimist Club, already have pledged support. Marcellus High School ninth-grader and Boy Scout Kevin Brown, meanwhile, has agreed to build the field’s dugouts as his Eagle Scout service project.

Marcellus softball teams currently play off-campus at Marcellus Park. Construction on the new field is expected to take place this spring and summer, to allow for a good turf-growing season before softball returns in the spring of 2015.
