Marcellus High School presents musical "Annie" March 7-8

Marcellus High School will present the musical, “Annie,” as this year's all-school show March 7 and 8 in the school’s Groeling Auditorium.

Based on the Harold Gray comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” this classic musical first opened on Broadway in 1977 with Andrea McArdle as its star. It ran for 2,377 performances and spawned a 1982 movie version starring Aileen Quinn. The story of everybody’s favorite ginger returned to Broadway in 2012 at the Palace Theatre, and closed in January 2014.

Set in the hardscrabble 1930s, “Annie” is the heartwarming story of an orphaned girl who dreams of one day finding her “forever family.” Annie (Audrey Cerrone) longs to be with her birth parents, who promised to come back for her someday. Instead, she has been stuck with a “hard-knock life” for years, in an orphanage run by cruel caretaker Miss Hannigan (Abbey Vensel).

Annie gets a lucky break when millionaire Oliver Warbucks’ assistant (Adina Martin), arrives at the orphanage looking for a child to spend Christmas with Warbucks (Zac Markham), as part of a publicity stunt. Will “Daddy Warbucks” and Annie end up creating their own forever family?

Cast and crew include more than 50 Marcellus Central School District students, and Katie Lemos Brown is directing.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8.

Tickets: $10 general admission at the door. (Pre-sale tickets will be available for $10 between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday (March 3 and 4) in the auditorium lobby.)
