The beginning of the school year in the Marcellus Central School District brings a series of curriculum nights that are designed to share information and enhance the connection between school and home. K. C. Heffernan (KCH) Elementary School held its annual 3rd Grade Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Gary Bissaillon, KCH Principal, welcomed parents to the informational evening by reminding the audience, “In 2007 I was reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear to your children at Kindergarten Orientation and now here we are.” The format for the curriculum night involved a presentation on the 3rd grade curriculum in the KCH gymnasium followed by individual teacher/classroom presentations that outlined daily routines, expectations, and homework. Cindy Bird, K-6 Curriculum Coordinator, presented an overview of the 3rd grade curriculum. Bird spoke to the literature base and writing focus of the English language arts program. She highlighted the use of the Scott Foresman text along with novels and leveled readers. Bird shared her insights on the District’s Everyday Math Program and emphasized the importance of “learning math facts”. Bird also reviewed components of the 3rd grade social studies, science, health, spelling, and technology programs. Following the general curriculum presentation, parents had the opportunity to meet with individual teachers in their respective classrooms.
Driver Middle School (DMS) held its Grade 4-6 Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 16, 2010. The format for the evening included grade level presentations by the building administrators and the special area faculty along with individual teacher/classroom presentations. Michael Dardaris, DMS Principal, welcomed parents to the informational evening as he shared the 2010-2011 school-wide theme, “Challenge Yourself with Healthy Risks”. Dardaris explained that middle school is a time for students to explore something new and to discover their unique talents. Dardaris spoke to new initiatives at DMS which included:
· Grade 4-6 intramural sports activities
· PTA Enrichment Classes
· Elementary Science Enrichment Program
· CLIC after school tutoring program
Dardaris’ excitement with the educational program at DMS was very apparent as he shared a PowerPoint presentation that highlighted the many changes that were occurring in our society and how those changes impact how we teach.
