On November 17th, 2010, over 500 Driver Middle School students competed in the first round of the Post-Standard/WCNY Spelling Bee. Students in the 4th-6th grade, in addition to approximately seventy participants from the 7th and 8th grade, were administered a written test consisting of 25 words. The top twenty five students qualified for the next round, an oral spelldown. These students included: Grade 5 Anna Perry, Grade 6 Michael Brown, Kayla Drager, Sydney Lewis, Grade 7 Claudia Choroser, Hayley Cross, Audrey Frajka, Julia Holyinski, Maddy Locastro, Rickie Mixon, Regina Perry, Giordano Romano, Teagan Todd Grade 8 Mike Clark, Colleen Condon, Alex Dunn, Colleen Ferguson, Carlo Mancini, MaryKate McHale, Mary Morocco, Rebekah Mullins, Trevor Parker, Nick Pinkowski, Nicole Scalice and Noah Schoeneck.
The next round, the oral spelldown, was held on November 29, 2010, in the DMS auditorium. The Spelling Bee Champion for 2010-2011 was Mike Clark with the winning word, PREJUDICE. Colleen Ferguson was a strong competitor and finished as runner-up. Mike and Colleen will represent DMS at the Post-Standard/WCNY Spelling Bee in January. We wish them both the Best of Luck!
