Driver Middle School 7th-8th Grade After School Intervention Program

Teaching and learning is all about the connection between teacher and child. The Driver Middle School Student Advocacy Team, in conjunction with the seventh/eighth grade instructional team, has developed and is now implementing an initiative designed to enhance the essential teacher-child connection for students in need. The innovative intervention program began on January 31, 2011 with a number of 7th and 8th grade teachers volunteering their time, after school, to tutor students one-to-one. The program is targeted toward students who are in need of additional academic support. The tutoring sessions take place Monday through Thursday from 2:20 PM- 3:20 PM. Participating students, and their parents, met with Alan Wing/DMS Guidance Counselor, and committed to the after school academic initiative by signing a “contract”. Ten (10) DMS students are currently involved in the program and their progress will be re-evaluated every five (5) weeks based on teacher feedback, student grades, and attendance. Kayla Hill, Driver Middle School Assistant Principal/K-6Director of Instruction, described the purpose of the program as follows: “The purpose of the program is to have students become self-sufficient and independent in school work and to ‘graduate’ from the program.” Erin Watson, program instructor, identifies the program’s value as follows, “Some kids just need a little extra structured work time in order to be successful, this program provides that structured time.” Driver Middle School staff involved in the after school tutoring intervention include:
