Marcellus High school, teacher honored for financial literacy

While attending the 11^th annual MoneyPower Conference for Financial Literacy in New York City earlier this month, Marcellus High School social studies teacher Jabe Kile was presented with the “Gold Star Teacher Award.”

The award honors teachers whose students achieve a 90 percent pass rate on the Working in Support of Education (w!se) Financial Literacy Certification Test.

While at the conference, Mr. Kile also accepted Marcellus High School’s “Blue Star” banner, which the school earned by achieving a 75 percent passing rate on the test; having a majority of students in a given grade level take the test; or having the students earn an average score of 80 percent or higher.

All students in Mr. Kile’s economics courses take the National Financial Literacy Certification Test created by w!se. 

It was Marcellus High School’s sixth consecutive banner – and Mr. Kile’s sixth Gold Star.

“That record of success earned us a spot on the list of the ‘100 Best w!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance’ announced earlier this year,” Mr. Kile said.

The conference, held Nov. 5 in the McGraw Hill Financial Conference Center in midtown Manhattan, included numerous presentations by leaders in the financial world and government and was attended by more than 300 teachers from 10 different states.

The two special guest speakers were David Bach, author of 11 national bestsellers, including “The Automatic Millionaire,” and Gary Belsky, columnist for Time.com and author of “Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes.”
