Driver Middle School Band dedicates spring concert to U.S. service members

The Driver Middle School Band will dedicate its upcoming spring concert – scheduled for 7 p.m. May 16 in Groeling Auditorium at Marcellus High School – to active members of the U.S. military.

Under the direction of Audrey Turner, the musical program will include a performance of “Flight of Valor,” a piece composed in memory of the heroic passengers of United Flight 93, which crashed in a Pennsylvania field on Sept. 11, 2001. After discussions about the meaning of valor, students decided to dedicate the concert to all men and women who have served our country or are now on active duty.

In addition to honoring the armed forces with their performance, band members also plan to collect and ship much-needed supplies overseas to the soldiers. With that in mind, the students ask that those attending the May 16th concert bring something to contribute to “soldier supplies.” Suggested items include hard candy, lotions, packaged goodies, pre-paid phone cards, magazines, playing cards, gum and notes of encouragement to soldiers.

All items collected will be sent to the 4th brigade of the 82nd Airborne Infantry, U.S. Army, whose members are currently serving their second deployment to Afghanistan. The unit has been in Afghanistan since February. Among the unit’s members is Army Spc. Zachary S. Finch, son of Marcellus High School nurse Terri Finch.
