The Marcellus Academic Club (M.A.C.) hosted its 13th annual Honors Recognition Dinner at the Marietta House on May 6. The event recognized honor and high honor seniors in the Marcellus Class of 2012.
The night began with a social hour, during which photographer Matthew Turner took advantage of the beautiful May evening by snapping images of the honorees and their parents in the venue’s adjacent gazebo. A group of select high school band members, directed by Mr. Michael Cirmo, provided musical entertainment.
Mr. John Durkee, Marcellus High School principal, welcomed the crowd and proclaimed his pride in the success of the students. Dinner was served, compliments of the Marietta House, and was accompanied by pianist Mike Clark, a freshman at Marcellus High School. After the meal, Sara Tallman (village trustee), Peter Hakes (town councilor) and Trish McCarron (assistant superintendent) delivered speeches of congratulations and advice. New York State Assemblyman William Barclay, who could not attend, provided each of the students with a certificate of merit from the Assembly.
Ryan Novak, a 2007 Marcellus graduate, delivered the keynote address. He recalled sitting on the other side of the podium just a few short years earlier during his own honors recognition banquet. Today, with a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises from Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management, Novak owns the Chocolate Pizza Company. The local company has seen a dramatic increase in sales under his leadership and now sells products in 275 locations in 33 states. Ryan offered the Class of 2012 his “Three Simple Truths”: Dream big, build a “dream team” and remember big dreams don’t come easy.
Next, Marion Hares, Heather Devendorf and Kathleen Battaglia, the Marcellus High School guidance counselors who worked closely with the seniors throughout their high school careers, distributed certificates of achievement to the students.
In their closing remarks, Superintendent Dr. Craig Tice and Board of Education President Mr. David Kelly, reiterated the message of pride, support and faith in the assembled students.
