Before doing so, the MSBC would first like to congratulate Brad Dates on his retirement as the district’s athletic director, and we wish him the very best for the future. Brad consistently worked with the MSBC to find creative ways to support and improve the district’s athletic programs. Best of luck, Brad, and we look forward to seeing you at the annual MSBC golf tournament fundraiser in June!
The MSBC is also very excited to welcome Mike Free, our new director of health, physical education and athletics. Mike brings invaluable experience from other area school districts, and we look forward to continuing the strong relationship between the MSBC and district administration. Welcome, Mike!
As we sprint toward the end of the academic year, it is worthwhile to pause and consider the significant contribution the Marcellus community has made in support of the district’s student-athletes and athletic programs, through its collaboration with and support of the MSBC. As of this writing, the MSBC has been able to provide more than $50,000 of support to the district during the last two academic years. A partial list of those accomplishments includes:
- $10,000 for senior student-athlete scholarships;
- $16,000 to help support modified sports opportunities;
- Approximately $8,000 of improvements to the high school wellness/fitness room;
- Approximately $4,000 in support of the end-of-year senior athlete banquet; and
- More than $7,000 of support for the purchase of new athletic team equipment.
The Marcellus community deserves a standing ovation for their effort and commitment!
As we celebrate this success, it is also important to look toward the future. In June, the MSBC will likely face a good deal of leadership turnover as many of the current officers and board members plan to pass the baton to the next generation of MSBC volunteers. The MSBC has been blessed by the infusion of many new and active volunteer participants, and while leadership transition for any organization can present challenges, the opportunities that come with new ideas can be an instant energizer.
If you’ve not yet found your way to an MSBC monthly meeting, we encourage you to try over the next few months as the new leadership team begins to take shape. As school budget worries continue, the MSBC will need the creative talents of many in its ongoing effort to augment district athletic opportunities.

Together we share the joy of a game-winning field goal or the gut-wrenching heartache of a season-ending overtime goal. But more importantly, together we ensure that our student-athletes will continue to have the chance to experience and learn from both.
