2010 Marcellus Senior High School Art Show

Art, creativity, and a sense of sharing were the theme of the day as Marcellus Senior High School visual arts department held its annual student art show in the SHS gymnasium. Marcellus Senior High School art teachers Donna Nicholas, Tim Smarzo, and Tara Charles welcomed visitors to an exceptional show that included pottery, sculpture, paintings, drawings, and computer art. More than 300 Marcellus Senior High School student artists had the opportunity to put their unique creativity on display at the June 4th art show which also featured works from 2010 Scholastic Arts Award winning artists such as Colin Hewitt, Zachary Garrison, Leda Brittenham, Shane Carey, Annie Dailey, Brennen Dooley, Zach Finkle, Lexie Greenhalgh, Heather Heinekamp, Greg Massara, Matt Tompkins, Dan Poorman, Nate Heath, Travis Wheeler, and Kyle Winks. The benefits of a one-campus school district were clearly on display as hundreds of students from K.C. Heffernan Elementary School and Driver Middle School had the opportunity to visit the art show. The museum guide program initiated by the high school art faculty was of particular note. The high school “docents” (museum guides) each took a group of elementary students on a guided tour of the art show, engaging their younger peers in observation, discussion, and enjoyment of the various pieces of art that were on display. The “docents” were trained through the Everson in Visual Thinking Strategy Program. This is the fourth year that the program has been implemented in Marcellus. Donna Nicholas, high school art teacher, describes the program as “highly successful and rewarding for all involved”. Marcellus Senior High School students participating as “docents” included Alaina Ylitalo, Rachel Marra, Jessica Stottler, Colleen Stapleton, Leda Brittenham, Olivia Higgins, Megan Grosholz, Sophia Beratta, Nicole Dorio, Angela Gonella, Gail Canne, Sarah Barber, Katie O’Connell, Sarah Francesconi, Rachel Sears, and Megan Colle.
