Festival of Bands: Marcellus Central School District

In what has been, for more than thirty years, the major highlight of the band concert season, the Marcellus Central School District held its annual “Festival of Bands” on Thursday, February 3, 2011 in the Groeling Auditorium. The guest conductor for the evening was Dr. Bradley P. Ethington, Associate Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Syracuse University. Ethington conducts the Syracuse University Symphony Band and teaches undergraduate and graduate level conducting. He is the Immediate Past President of the Big East Conference Band Directors Association and he has appeared as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States, Western Europe, and Australia. The Marcellus Festival of Bands performance program included:
The Marcellus Elementary Band, Carmen Costa, Director performed “Jupiter from ‘The Planets’”; “Dark Adventure”; “Jurassic Shark” (conducted by Dr. Ethington); and “Perseus and the Sea Monster”(conducted by Dr. Ethington)
The Driver Middle School Band, Audrey Turner, Director performed “Flourish for Wind Band”; “Among the Clouds” (conducted by Dr. Ethington); and “On the March” (conducted by Dr. Ethington)
The Marcellus High School Concert Band, Michael Cirmo, Director performed “Fanfare and Flourishes”; “Symphonic Overture” (conducted by Dr. Ethington); and “Dublin Sketches” (conducted by Dr. Ethington)
The Marcellus High School Symphonic Band, Michael Cirmo, Director performed “Ride”; “Polly Oliver” (conducted by Dr. Ethington); “Spitfire” (conducted by Dr. Ethington)
Featured soloists during the high school band segment of the concert included Michelle Rice/Flute, Keirstalyn Wade/Oboe, and Molly McGuane/French Horn on “Dublin Sketches”; Angela Pugliese/Alto Saxophone on “Ride”; and Mary Perry/Mallet on “Spitfire”. The entire percussion section of the Symphonic Band was featured on “Ride”. The Festival of Bands concert came to a rousing conclusion as the “Combined Bands” performed “Marcellus March” by John Edmondson, a musical composition that was commissioned and premiered by the 1993-94 Marcellus Elementary Band. During the concert Dr. Ethington commented on the excellence of the District’s instrumental music program/teachers as well as the talents and character of the more than 300 student musicians who participated in the concert. Dr. Ethington also commended the impressive teaching value and the musical excellence of the Festival of Bands program selections. Educational research indicates that there is clear correlation between exceptional music education programs and academic excellence in other core subject areas. The Marcellus Central School District Festival of Bands is just one District example of a well rounded quality arts and academic educational program.
