K. C. Heffernan Family Math Night

Mathematics was the focus of attention as K.C. Heffernan (KCH) Elementary School held a “Family Math Night” to explore the wonders of the school’s Everyday Math Program. The informational and fun evening took place on February 10th in the KCH cafeteria. Ginger Holleran, KCH AIS mathematics teacher, welcomed more than forty-five (45) students and family members to an evening that was filled with numbers, math facts, and unique math games. Cindy Bird, Marcellus Central School District K-6 Curriculum Coordinator, explained the focus of the family math experience, “Games are an important part of your child’s Everyday Math Program here at school, so go out and play games with your kids.” Following the welcome and introductions KCH classroom teachers Lori Kankus/1st Grade, Jen Sega/2nd grade, and Maria Healy/3rd grade introduced a variety of Everyday Math games to students and families from their respective grade levels. Games learned and played by Kankus and her 1st grade participants included “Coin Exchange”, ”The Digit Game”, “Top-It”, and “The Number Grid Game”. Games introduced to 2nd grade families by Sega included “Name That Number”, “Top-It”, and “The Fact Extension Game”. 3rd Grade teacher Healy shared “Target Number”, “Beat the Calculator”, and “The Digit Game” with her attentive students and families. Refreshments were available throughout the evening and each child received a “math gift bag” which included items such as a “math card deck” and a “calculator”.
