Scholastic Art Awards

Congratulations go out to seventeen Marcellus Central School District student artists for their selection as 2011 Central New York Scholastic Art Award Recipients. 2011 CNY Scholastic Award recipients were honored at a ceremony held at Onondaga Community College on January 19, 2011. Student artists came from more than ninety (90) junior and senior high schools and more than 4,500 works of art were submitted for award consideration. Professional judges reviewed and examined the Scholastic Art Award entries before the honorees were announced at the January 19th ceremony. According to Cher Ferrara, Driver Middle School art teacher, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards “were launched in 1923 to encourage and recognize student achievement in the creative arts.” The Scholastic Awards attract over 250,000 entries in 25 categories of writing and the visual arts. Scholarships totaling more than $200,000 are awarded nationally to students in grades 7-12. The dedication to excellence demonstrated by the Marcellus Central School District art program is reflected in the performance of the District’s Scholastic Art Award honorees who garnered five (5) Gold Keys and four (4) Silver Keys among their honors. Congratulations go out to the seventeen student artists who were recognized with 2011 Scholastic Art Awards and to District art teachers Fran Hagan, Shannon Femano, Cher Ferrara, Donna Nicholas, Tim Smarzo, and Tara Charles for their hard work and creative inspiration. The award winning works of art will be on display at the Whitney Applied Technology Building at Onondaga Community College through March 4th. The display is open to the public and the gallery hours are 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Monday through Friday; 9:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M. Saturday and Sunday. Marcellus Central School District 2011 Scholastic Art Award honorees include five Driver Middle School student artists and twelve young artists from Marcellus Senior High School.
