Keirstalyn Wade, a sophomore at Marcellus High School has been chosen to be a member of the SSYO 2010-2011 as an oboe player. She earned this distinction through a competitive audition last spring. Keirstalyn is a wonderful musician and has participated in many honor groups and all-county festivals. To be a member of the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra is among the highest distinctions a high school musician can achieve. The first concert of the 2010-2011 season took place on Sunday, November 7th. The orchestra played wonderfully! The concert highlight was a performance of the famous “Unfinished Symphony”, Sym. No. 8 by Franz Schubert. Founded in 1970, the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra (SSYO) draws its membership from over 25 Central New York School Districts. The 2010-2011 SSYO is conducted by James Tapia. The musicians are selected through an audition process and rehearse on Sunday afternoons during the academic year. The mission of the SSYO is as follows:

“Mission: The purpose of the SSYO is to provide outstanding Central New York secondary school musicians in grades 9-12 with the opportunity to rehearse and perform orchestral literature in a highly professional environment.”

The orchestra performs works from the orchestral repertoire as well as modern works by American composers. SSYO members participate in sectional rehearsals coached by members of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the SSYO's parent organization. They also perform in a joint Side-By-Side concert with the SSO each March. These talented young musicians continue a long tradition of musical and artistic excellence that is a hallmark of the Central New York community. Congratulations Keirstalyn!!
