Third grade students at K. C. Heffernan Elementary School experienced an up close and personal view of the “habitat” component of the third grade science curriculum as they visited the Rosamond Gifford Zoo on Tuesday, November 23rd. Third grade teachers participating in the educational field trip included Rose Battaglia, Marlene Feister, Stacy Grooms, Janet Kringer, Maria Healy, and Eileen Driscoll. The classes, supported by numerous parent volunteers, moved about the zoo exhibits completing a variety of assignments relative to animal habitat. Each student had an “animal information sheet” to complete that asked the students a variety of questions related to the habitats of primates, cats, and birds. Information collected by the students included geographic location, habitat characteristics, diet, adaptations, and predator or prey. The classes also explored whether the animal was an Omnivore, a Carnivore, or a Herbivore. Among the animals researched by students at the Gifford Zoo were:
Primates: Vervet Monkey, Squirrel Monkey, Madrill, Siamang, Golder Lion Tamarin, Ruffled Lemur, Ring Tailed Lemur
Cats: Lion, Tiger, Lynx, Snow Leopard, Ocelot
Birds: Roseate Spoonbill, Penguin, Tundra Swan, Flamingo, Peregrine Falcon, Eagle.
Additionally, students had to list three endangered species, diagram a food chain relative to an animal of choice, and list three interesting facts that they learned on the Zoo Field Trip.
