Jazz Cabaret Lights-up the Groeling Auditorium

The Groeling Auditorium was alive with the sights and sounds of the Driver Middle School Jazz Ensemble, the Marcellus Senior High School Jazz Band, and the High School Select Choir True Sound as the Marcellus Fine Arts Department staged the annual Jazz Cabaret Concert on Friday, April 8, 2011. The event, which typically is held in the DMS cafeteria, was being staged at the newly renovated Groeling Auditorium for the first time. Michael Cirmo, MSHS Jazz Band Director, commented on the change, “We thought we would try things out up here and we have kind of morphed into a jazz concert and variety show.” Whatever the format of the cabaret, one thing was certain, the audience responded with enthusiasm and excitement to the wide variety of exceptional student talent that took to the stage. Performances included: · “Percdiddy I&II by the Marcellus Senior High School Percussion Ensemble · “Moon Dance” by Eddie Powers (vocal) and Mary Perry (ukulele and vocal) · “Ain’t No Cover” unaccompanied vocal by Megan Grosholz · “Get Ready”(Jesse Garn/Conductor) and “Night Train” (Emily Gascon/Conductor) by the combined DMS Jazz Ensemble and the MSHS Jazz Band · “Stepping Out with My Baby”, “Putting on the Ritz”, and “New York State of Mind” by the MSHS Select Choir True Sound, Brian Ackles/director · “Hard Right”, “Afro Blue”, “Take Five”, “Love Shack”, “Cool by Leonard Bernstein”, and “25 or 624” by the MSHS Jazz Band, Michael Cirmo/director · “Poco Loco”, “In the Doghouse”, “Sunday Morning”, and “Shake Twist and Jump” by the DMS Jazz Ensemble, Audrey Turner/director Cirmo also recognized and honored senior jazz band members during the cabaret concert; Jesse Garn/trumpet, Chris Charles/trumpet, Anthony Delia/trombone, Jimmy Carlton/trombone, Tyler Hancock/Bass, Emily Gascon/tenorsax, Catie Nonenmaker/alto sax.
