KCH TV Meteorology 101

With the outdoor temperature hovering in the low 20s on March 28th, K. C. Heffernan (KCH) 3rd grade students received a well timed lesson on the weather as News Channel 9 WSYR TV meteorologist Jim Teske visited KCH. Teske’s TV Meteorology 101 presentation took the very attentive group through all the “components of putting together an accurate television weather forecast”. Teske shared his thoughts as he asked the group, “What do I have to find out and consider before I can make a forecast?” He then guided the 3rd grade classes through a brainstorming exercise that brought the following responses to the opening questions: Winds: speed and direction, surface and high altitude Temperature How much water is in the air Air pressure Teske stressed that a change in any one of the above elements has a direct impact on the other elements. He vividly demonstrated this concept as he placed a hard-boiled egg upon an empty bottle. The audience, students and teachers alike, were awestruck as Teske called upon a student to place a “lighted” cotton ball into the bottle and the egg was sucked unbroken by the vacuum that was created. Among the topics covered during Teske’s TV Meteorology 101 program were: Air Masses Air Pressure Weather Fronts, Hot and Cold Doppler Radar, local and national Weather Satellites Teske closed his weather learning experience as he shared a Lake Effect Snow video that depicted the impact of the 2007 lake effect snow storm that dropped more than 110 inches of snow on northern New York .
