New York Agriculture in the Classroom Visits K.C. Heffernan Elementary School Second Grade Classroom

Students in 2nd grade classrooms at K. C. Heffernan Elementary School received a special “read-a-loud” treat during the month of March as high school students from Future Farmers of America (FFA) visited the class. The event was an initiative of the sixth annual New York Agricultural Literacy Week which is coordinated by New York Agriculture in the Classroom. Students from Tully High School’s FFA visited each second grade classroom and read the book “Chick and Chickens” written by Gail Gibbons, a local second grade teacher. The book highlights the New York State poultry industry and was donated to the KCH library as a component of the Agricultural Literacy Week initiative. Last year 1200 books were read to approximately 40,000 students across New York State.
