Marcellus Senior High School Math Students Star at Ithaca College Math Exploration Day
Students from Marcellus Senior High School (MSHS) put their considerable mathematical talents on display as they participated in the Ithaca College Math Exploration Day on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Ithaca College. Faculty facilitators Heidi Szalach/MSHS math teacher and Richelle Schettine/MSHS math teacher coordinated Marcellus student involvement with the event. 140 students representing schools from all over Central New York and the Southern Tier participated in the Math Exploration Day that included a team math competition and a variety of math workshops and presentations. Four (4) person student teams competed in the morning math contest and the Marcellus group earned exceptional 1st and 2nd place honors for the competition. Following the math contest students had the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops and presentations. Mini workshops included “Suduko”, “Why Not to Gamble”, “Geometric Numbers”, “Mathematical Card Trick”, “Broken Squares”, and “Tessellating”. Dani Novak directed a large group session entitled “Geometry and Algebra with Geogebra: Exploring the Golden Mean”.
