Michael Brown and the K. C. Heffernan (KCH) Elementary School Library Media Center held its first Open Library Night on Thursday, October 7, 2010 in the KCH Library. The event was held in conjunction with the KCH PTO’s fall book fair. Brown opened up the “open library” evening by telling his student and family audience that research tells us that “one of the best things that you can do for kids is to read out loud to them.” Brown shared that “you can actually read books to children that are five (5) years above their reading level.” Among the faculty/administrators reading to children and families at the open library evening were:
· Cindy Bird/K-6 Curriculum Coordinator – “A Story for Bear”
· Becky Eaton/Speech Therapist – “Watch Me Throw the Ball”
· Jodi Wiley/Kindergarten Teacher – “Sarah’s Story”
· Michael Brown/Library Media Specialist – selections from “Where the Sidewalk Ends”
As students and families enjoyed the open library and book fair festivities Principal Gary Bissaillon was creating his best impression of “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Super Reader Man”.
