Red Ribbon Week at Marcellus Senior High School and Driver Middle School, October 25-29, 2010

Substance abuse prevention and positive decision making defined the message of the day as Marcellus Senior High School and Driver Middle School (DMS) in the Marcellus Central School District celebrated Red Ribbon Week the week of October 25th. Red Ribbon Week was established, nationally, in 1998 to celebrate and continue to remind both children and adults to remain drug free. This year’s Red Ribbon activities reflected a “Peace out to Drugs” theme. The Red Ribbon Week event at Marcellus Senior High School was initiated and facilitated by the Students Against Destructive Decisions organization. Faculty advisor Laurie Updike worked with the student group to create a week of daily themed activities which included:
· Monday: Tie Dye Day – “Say Peace Out to Drugs”
· Tuesday: Camo Day – “Be a hero every day, say no to drugs”
· Wednesday: Sunglasses Day – “Shade out drugs”
· Thursday: Jersey Day – “Keep your head in the game without drugs”
· Friday : Red Out Day – “Keep the drugs out”
Red Ribbon Week activities at Driver Middle School were facilitated by DMS Grade 4-6 School Counselor Lorraine Reynolds and included the following activities:
· Monday, Tuesday (October 25, 26) – Students designed their own Tie Dye T-shirt. The shirts were then displayed on the DMS cafeteria windows to serve as a visual representation of the school commitment to be drug free.
· Tuesday (October 26) – Wearing red classroom contest. The class with the greatest percentage of students wearing red received a pizza party.
· Wednesday (October 27) – Tie Dye Day: Students and staff wore their favorite tie dye shirt, pants and/or hat.
· Thursday (October 28th) – School Pride Day: Students and staff wore Marcellus Mustang apparel
· Friday (October 29th) – Costume Day: Students wore their Halloween costumes to demonstrate that “drugs, alcohol and tobacco are tricks not treats and that we are saying ‘boo’ to drugs.”
All students at Driver Middle School received a pencil and sticker emphasizing the “Peace out to drugs” Red Ribbon Week theme. Additionally, classroom teachers had the opportunity to show a Red Ribbon Week Video in their respective classrooms.
