The Marcellus Central School District held school district emergency evacuation drills the week of October 4, 2010. Students and staff at Driver Middle School participated in the emergency evacuation drill on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 while K. C. Heffernan Elementary School and Marcellus Senior High School evacuated on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. The evacuation drills took place in all three buildings during the morning hours immediately following the arrival of students at school. Students and staff evacuated to the off-campus sites which included Marcellus United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Upon completion of emergency evacuation drill the District’s transportation department returned students to campus for a continuation of the regular school day.
The practice evacuation drill “culminates a three-year review cycle in the school district: 1) Assesses and updates the emergency plans during the first year; 2) engages in a mock evacuation with staff only during the second year; 3) and then practices a full-scale evacuation involving students, teachers and the transportation department for the third year.” The District would like to express its sincere appreciation to the local Marcellus Village Police and the Marcellus Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance with traffic control and for their insightful observations. Additionally, observers from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, the Onondaga County Office of Emergency Management, and the OCM BOCES Emergency Coalition Safety Council participated as observers.
