Driver Middle School 7/8 Band Spring Concert

The Driver Middle School (DMS) 7th and 8th Grade Band presented its 2011 spring concert on Monday, May 16th in the Groeling Auditorium. A wide variety of exciting musical compositions were performed for the enthusiastic audience under the direction of band director Audrey Turner. The Spring Concert program included:
· “Valdres Concert March” by Johannes Hanssen, trumpet soloists: Matt Corcoran, Trevor Costa, Drew Mosher, Chris Torell, and Evan Turner
· “River of the Ancients” by Michael Sweeney
· “Azure Hills” by Steve Hodges
· “Pieces of Eight” by Larry Clark
· “Appalachian Morning” by Robert Sheldo, clarinet soloists: Rachel Ceparski, Kristin Field; Trumpet soloists: Evan Turner, Matt Corcoran
· “Groovee” by Richard Saucedo
· “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga: arranged and conducted by Michael Clark

The spotlight of the 7th and 8th grade band concert was the performance of “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. The concert selection was arranged and conducted by Driver Middle School student Michael Clark. The concert program notes describe Mike’s dedicated efforts as follows:
“To arrange a piece of music requires a multitude of skills. The arranger needs to choose a medium, in this case the concert band, and must have an understanding of all the elements of that medium. This includes knowledge of the range of technical abilities of all instruments within the band and their transpositions……..Mike has devoted many hours to writing and rewriting this arrangement. The band members have truly appreciated his talents and the opportunity to play some really cool music.”

A special thanks goes out to DMS art teachers Shannon Femano and Cher Ferrara who created a slide show of student art work as a backdrop for the concert.
