2011 Marcellus Senior High School Art Show

Shared creativity and artistic talent were clearly the spotlight of the hour as the Marcellus Senior High School visual arts department held its annual student art show in the senior high school gymnasium on June 3, 2011. Marcellus Senior High School art teachers Donna Nicholas, Tim Smarzo, and Tara Charles welcomed visitors to an exceptional museum like experience that included:
· AP Studio Art Senior Portfolios
· Selected works from Driver Middle School (DMS) and K. C. Heffernan (KCH) students
· Hundreds of works by high school art students in ceramics, sculpture, drawing, and photography
· The second appearance of the knowledge box, showing the video work of Matt Tompkins
· National Scholastic Art Silver Medal Award winning digital photograph by Megan Colle
Colle received her National Scholastic Art Award Silver Medal at a ceremony held at Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 31st. The benefits of a one campus school district setting were also clearly on display as hundreds of students from DMS and KCH had the opportunity to visit the art show. In what has fast become a Marcellus tradition the “Docent Program” initiated by the high school art faculty was also a featured experience at the Senior High School Art Show. The high school “docents” (museum guides) took small groups of elementary students on guided tours of the art show, engaging their younger peers in observation, discussion, and enjoyment of the various pieces of art on display. The docents received training in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse on April 26th. They used “visual thinking strategies” to guide discussions about the artwork as elementary students toured the exhibits. Elementary classes participating in the “Docent Program” included Melissa Delaney’s 1st grade, Jen Sega’s 2nd grade, Eileen Driscoll’s 3rd grade, Susanna Morrissey’s 2nd grade, and Lisa MacLachlan’s 2nd grade.
