Marcellus Senior High School Academic and Service Awards

Academic excellence and a celebration of achievement and recognition were the featured events as Marcellus Senior High School held the Twentieth Annual Academic and Service Awards program on June 2, 2011 in the Groeling Auditorium. Principal John Durkee and Assistant Principal Deborah Glisson welcomed students and families to a program that included the Marcellus Academic Club Awards, the Junior Class College/Special Awards, and Department Awards for Career and Technical Education, English, Mathematics, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Visual Arts, and World Language. The Marcellus Academic Club hosted a reception in the main foyer of the Groeling Auditorium for all honorees and their families.

Special Recognition Awards 2011

Cornell Book Award - Honorable Mention – Alanna Todd
Each year a Cornell Book Award, sponsored by the Cornell Alumni Association of Central New York, is given to an outstanding junior from each of several high schools in Central New York. Many area schools were asked to nominate a student for the award. A select group of ten Central New York students were then chosen to receive the award. Selections are made on the basis of academic excellence, outstanding character, and demonstrated leadership qualities in the school and community.

Wellesley Book Award - Recipient – Colleen Stapleton
The Wellesley Book Awards Program honors a female student in the junior class whose academic record and character are exceptional and who has made significant personal contributions to her school and/or community.

Rensselaer Medal - Recipient – Matthew Tice
For more than 75 years Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has awarded the Rensselaer Medal to secondary school students who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science. The medal, first presented in l916, has two purposes: to recognize superlative academic achievement and to motivate students toward higher education leading to careers in science and engineering. To be honored with the RPI Medal, a student must be a member of the junior class and an outstanding student in mathematics and science. Each medalist who is accepted and enrolls at RPI receives a Medal Scholarship worth a minimum of $60,000.

Clarkson Leadership and Achievement Awards - Recipients – Danielle Felty and Chadwick Johnson
Clarkson University will recognize members of the junior class with $44,000.00 and $36.000.00 tuition scholarships, respectively over four years should he/she choose to enroll at Clarkson. The junior students must demonstrate leadership, be recognized by students and faculty as being a positive contribution to their school and community, and be in the top 15% of their class.

LeMoyne College Heights Award - Recipient- Phillip Zdanowski
LeMoyne College sponsors an annual award that recognizes high school juniors who are “reaching for the heights” in the classroom and in service to their school and community. The award provides a certificate of recognition and a $5,000.00 annual scholarship to LeMoyne College.

Wells College Junior Leadership Award - Recipient- Sarah Francesconi
This award recognizes a junior student with an exceptional record of academic excellence balanced with extracurricular contributions to his/her high school and community. This award represents a scholarship of $20,000.00 which will be distributed throughout the student’s four years of study at Wells College.

The Elmira Key Award - Recipients – Faith Seeley and Ryan Bonk
The Elmira College Alumni Association has been presenting the Elmira Key Award since 1935 to outstanding young men and women. The award recipient receives the prestigious Elmira Key, as well as, the potential for a $28,000.00 scholarship over four years.

The Marcellus Faculty Association Book Award - Recipient – Alaina Ylitalo
The MFA honors a student in the junior class on the basis of academic excellence, outstanding character, and demonstrated leadership qualities in the school and community.

University of Rochester Humanities and Social Sciences Award - Recipient – Rebecca Nolan
Winners of this award are selected on the basis of scholarship in the humanities or social sciences, leadership and community service. The student is eligible to apply for a scholar program at University of Rochester. The student selected receives a $24,000.00 minimum scholarship over four years at University of Rochester.

Sage Arts Award - Recipient – Leda Brittenham
Sage College of Albany is pleased to present this award to a member of the junior class who embodies Sage College’s motto of “Design Your Future” through his/her achievements and involvement, and in doing so brings recognition to Marcellus High School. The award was created to recognize the characteristics of artistic talent, academic excellence, student leadership and community involvement. As a Sage Arts Award recipient, this student is eligible for a scholarship ranging up to $15,000 for each year of study, should they attend Sage College of Albany.

Student Sage Recognition Award - Recipient – Kathryn Busa
The Student Sage Recognition Award is presented to an outstanding junior to recognize the characteristics of academic excellence, student leadership and community school involvement.

Marcellus Character Award – Recipients - Kate O’Connell and Taylor Rescignano
The Marcellus Character Award is presented to outstanding juniors on the basis of outstanding character, academic achievement and demonstrated leadership.

The Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award - Recipient- Alanna Todd
This award is in recognition of outstanding achievement and superior intellectual promise in the field of science.

Dartmouth Book Award- Recipient- Madeline Balman
The Dartmouth Book Award is given to a junior in the top ten percent of his/her class who has demonstrated intellectual leadership, has made a positive contribution to the extracurricular life of the school, and is of high moral character.

The St. Michael’s College Book Award for Scholarship and Service Recipients- Grace Carlic and Sean Dunn
This book award seeks to recognize juniors who exhibit the characteristics of an ideal Saint Michael’s student, based specifically on achievement in academics and community service.

University of Rochester Kodak Young Leaders Certificate - Recipient- Sarah Kelly
This certificate is presented to a junior who demonstrates strong academic achievement and leadership skills.

The Marcellus School Counselor Award - Recipients- Bryan Koes, Ballie Vensel, Jessica Osborne and Karina Wagner
The School Counselors honor students from the junior class on the basis of academic excellence, outstanding character, and demonstrated leadership qualities in the school and community.

Marcellus Principal’s Awards Recipients- Olivia Higgins and Kelsey Nowak
This award is given in honor of the students’ academic excellence, outstanding character, and demonstrated leadership at Marcellus High School.

College of the Atlantic Book Award – Recipient - Austin Quinlan
This award is given to the student who is regarded as a community-minded citizen and a passionate steward of social, economic, and environmental progress.
