Marcellus High School Spanish Students Teach at K. C. Heffernan Elementary School

Third grade students at K. C. Heffernan (KCH) Elementary School received a special learning treat throughout the month of March, as Marcellus Senior High School Spanish students, under the direction of Spanish teacher Shelly Marsh, taught Spanish lessons at KCH. The high school Spanish students came down to Heffernan on Friday mornings to share their Spanish knowledge with their younger peers. Students in Rose Battaglia’s third grade class were happy to see their high school friends on March 12th and responded with excitement to the interactive lesson that was presented to them. The March 12th Spanish lesson included the creation of a Spanish nametag for each 3rd grade student. Following the name tag activity the high school students completed an instructional lesson that taught the class the Spanish words for the days of the week. The third grade students were immersed in the learning as they participated in a Spanish “days of the week” song and dance that was set to the music of the “Chicken Dance”. The teaching of Spanish to third grade students exemplifies one of the many benefits of a “campus” school setting.
