Tension filled the air in the Aitchison Auditorium at Driver Middle School on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 as Nancy van der Ven’s and George Mango’s sixth grade classes brought their Battle of the Books to an exciting conclusion. The three month long competition had students reading award winning books as they looked to move forward in the book battle tournaments. Teams consisted of four students with the criteria being that each team member had to read at least three books. Some students read as many as fourteen books. Competition took place weekly with successful teams advancing to the next round of the tournament bracket. Teams were judged using a scoring rubric and classroom parents served as score keepers. Eliminated teams were encouraged to read along and be actively involved audience members. The competition allowed for challenges and interaction with the audience. The final round was held on March 3, 2010 with former DMS principal Patrick Collier serving as moderator. Judges for the championship round included Michael Dardaris/DMS principal, Pam Springer/DMS reading teacher, and Lorraine Reynolds/DMS counselor. The event included 20 rounds of questions from more than a dozen books. Among the questions asked were:
“In which book does little Lisbeth Searcy become a much bigger help than the main character expected?”
“In which book does a birthday present a key to an empty house?”

After more than an hour of intense competition, the TTNABN team emerged victorious with a score of 170 out of a possible 190. The Reader team finished second with 167 and the Silent team scored 160 to grab third place. TTTNABN stands for The Team That Needs A Better Name. Team members are listed below:
