Congratulations go out to Michael Quercia, class of 2010, who won the Junior Boys Indoor Track 600 meter run at the New Balance National Collegiate Invitational Track Meet at the Armory in New York City the weekend of February 5th. Quercia’s time of 1:19.37 is a national best time for 600 meters this year. That means that no high school runner in the nation has run a faster indoor 600 meters than Quercia this school year. Quercia’s exceptional winning time is the third fastest time in New York State history and the eighth fastest in the country, all time! Quercia gave up football to run cross country this fall and he “called himself in phenomenal shape” prior to the run. These words were written about Quercia ‘s race on the Armory Track website:
“Mike knew the pace shot out too fast but he could either follow or take a back seat and watch the race unfold in front of him. The Marcellus Senior is accustomed to front running. But instead, he latched on to Keith Griffith (Florence, NJ) and let Griffith carry them through two laps. The pace ensured that someone would pay and Griffith, having done all the work, was then forced to foot the bill. All Quercia needed to do was take advantage. ‘We went out a little too fast’, Quercia said. ‘I knew it was going to happen because of all the 400 meter runners in the race.’ Quercia had never raced at the Armory and said it was just his second time ever competing on a banked track………Quercia started running track as a short sprinter who found success at the 400 meter last year. Now Quercia is set to run the 800 meters at the Nike Indoor Nationals next month."
