The National French Honor Society (NFHS) inducted its new members in April of 2009. Over the past year NFHS President Tori Peryea and fellow officers Vice President Nina Yevseyev, Secretary Alivia Caldwell, Treasurer Matt Coon, Ambassador Nathan Labourdette, and Public Liaison Kelly Ryan have been hard at work with various projects. The students designed and sold French tee-shirts to raise money for the club. They also sold crepes at the Driver Middle School Holiday Happening and raised more than $100 for a charitable organization.
After hearing about the earthquake in Haiti and the devastation it caused, students were moved to rally Marcellus Senior High School French students to raise money to help the people of Haiti. Students raised $458 for Partners in Health, a group that has been working directly with the Haitian people for some time. The workers speak both French and Creole and have been able to provide immediate medical attention. In addition, students will be joining other French students from the Central New York area for a walk at Onondaga Lake Park on April 11th. All money raised will go to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Students will also be attending a benefit concert for Haiti on April 27th at Baker High. The concert will be given by the Quebec singer Josée Vachon. 100% of the profits will go to Partners in Health to support their efforts in Haiti. If you are interested in attending, tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any French Honor Society member.
FHS Students paired with a school in Thibeau, Haiti prior to the earthquake. This is a school with few supplies and no electricity. This spring they will be creating science posters in the French language. These posters will greatly aid the students as well as the teachers. If anyone has old biology posters they would be willing to donate this would be greatly appreciated.
On April 29th, the French Honor Society will hold its induction for new members. In order to be invited into FHS, students must be enrolled in French throughout all four years of High School and maintain a 90+ average each year.
