DMS Sixth Grade Team Takes Second Place Honors
in the Sixth Grade New York State Mathematics League Contest,
James Murphy is the DMS School Champion

On February 23rd, 97 sixth grade students and one fifth grade student participated in the annual Sixth Grade New York State Mathematics League Contest. Students were given 30 minutes to complete 40 challenging math problems. Because of the high level of difficulty, a score of 15 is considered commendable. Very few students who take the exam throughout the state receive a score as high as 30. The following is an example of one of the more challenging problems that students were asked to solve:

Our top five scores were sent in to represent C. S. Driver Middle School in the state contest. The following students earned that honor:

Tied for the 3rd highest score of 29 are Alexandra Cormack, Audrey Frajda, and Devon Kelsey.

Our second place winner, who scored an impressive 31, is Mark Santariello.

Our DMS 6th grade Math League Contest winner is James Murphy. James had an outstanding score of 32.

In addition to the 5 top scores that represented Driver Middle School, seven students tied for the fourth highest score of 28. They are Matthew Bailey, Patrick Crosley, Gavin Hoey, Julia Holynski, Maddy Locastro, Haley Randall, and Sydney Stehle.

A number of other students scored 25 or higher. They are: Meg Blystone, Claudia Choroser, Patrick Crosley, Tom Dailey, Reese Eddy, Ross Filtch, Gavin Hoey, Julia Holynski, Abi Kankus, Maverick Keegan, Michael Keegan, Michael Kent, Connor Lundrigan, Patrick McGuane Neil Minet, Rickie Mixon, Ryan Roseboom, Nick Sonnacchio, and Lisa Morocco. Lisa is a 5th grade student.

The results of the Math League Contest have been received. 110 schools participated throughout New York State. Out of all the teams participating from eight counties in Central and Northern New York, which includes Cayuga, Clinton, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Saint Lawrence, and Tompkins, our sixth grade team from Driver Middle School took Second Place honors.
