Driver Middle School Fourth Grade Class Visits Mountain Man Maple Syrup Farm

Students in Suzanne Alexander’s and Janine Snyder’s fourth grade class at Driver Middle School got a special natural “syrupy” treat as they visited the Mountain Man Maple Syrup Farm on Saturday, March 13, 2010. The teachers, students, and families arrived at the farm at 11:00 AM and were greeted by farm owners Peter and Cindy Estlinbaum. The Estlinbaums demonstrated the process of tapping a maple tree and “showed the large 850 gallon stainless steel collection tank”. The group then ventured out in small groups to the sugar shack and into the “caboose” where the final stage of bottling the maple syrup takes place. The weekend class field trip served to enhance the on-going classroom “Plant Kingdom” science unit and the experience provided a meaningful venue for students to witness science in action through a local small business at work.
