One of the greatest benefits of a one campus school setting is the opportunity for high school students to serve as role models and mentors for their younger peers. Once again this benefit was clearly in evidence as students from the Marcellus Senior High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Teen Institute organizations spent the morning of March 30, 2010 teaching 3rd grade students at K. C. Heffernan Elementary School. The character education flavored learning activities were designed to enhance the positive decision making abilities of the 3rd grade participants. The high school students worked with small groups of 3rd grade students as they implemented four hands-on, interactive lesson plans which included:
Effects of smoking on the lungs: a fun activity, which had 3rd graders breathing through a straw, to experience the impact of smoking upon their breathing ability.
Resistance skills: a hands on activity designed to demonstrate ways to say “no” to peer pressure.
Caution activity: a demonstration to the students showing them that things aren’t always as they appear. This activity also stressed that the third grade students should never take anything (food, medication, etc.) from anyone but trusted adults.
Decision making: an activity to help students recognize that the choices they make today impact tomorrow.
